Sunday 21st August saw the first Glasgow River Rat Race, based around the new Transport Museum on the banks of the Clyde. About 800 people turned out to race, spread across 5 waves each separated by about 20 minutes. The course was a roughly 10km running route, littered with obstacles and activities - and in the late summer sun, a light smattering of snow!

I teamed up with Rosemary Byde for this years Open5+ that was held near Holyhead on Anglesey. Somewhat oddly this was going to be my first Open5+. The Open5+ is a similar format to the standard Open5 races with addition of some of James "Trouser Filler" special activities. As normal the website was a bit sparse on exactly what the special activities were, just that we need a climbing harness and had to carry some spare clothes. The details were also suggesting that the biking was mainly on the road and suggested road tyres, so like quite a few other teams and after a bit of a discussion we took a gamble and went for road bikes hoping that the extra speed would pay off. |

I'm not an expert, I just fancied taking on the coast to coast challenge in 1 day, with a healthy dose of kayaking. Arriving and racking my road bike at Cawdor castle I felt even less of an expert when I saw the array of carbon fibre stacked up! A quick ride of mine reminded me of the bike faults I hadn't got around to fixing - the front mech didn't really work, only going onto the small ring with a helping foot, and not changing onto the big ring at all! The bottom bracket and headset also making some strange creaking noises. Never mind, it hasn't fallen apart yet, probably going to last another 55km!
