Open 5 LogoSunday 5th April brought to an end the 2008/2009 Mountain Hardware Open 5 Series, the final event being staged in the High Peak area around Hope; the name itself forming the basis of many a pun, all of which are probably too predictable to appear here. Probably. For Top Bananas, it was a low turnout - distance from Edinburgh, a Stag weekend and revision all being cited as reasons not to make the journey. It could also be due to a return to the High Peak area, recently visited by the team on the High Peak Marathon.

With rain and drizzle on the journey South on Saturday, the blue skies and sunshine were a welcome surprise on Sunday morning - James and Ian (the race planner) must have some good contacts high up.

With a forecast of rain, high winds and possible snow flurries, the inaugural 'Trailplus Helly Hansen Adventure X' race in the Southern Lake District was going to challenge minds, bodies and clothing. For 19 teams though, the lure of over £4000 in prizes was enough to get some really close racing, set in some superb scenery.

Deerstalker 2009Saturday 21st March marked the second anniversary of the now infamous 'muddy borders romp' that is the Mighty Deerstalker. Billed as a 5K and a 10K run, although the 'K' doesn't quite conform to standard SI units of measurement; indeed, conforming is the last thing that the Deerstalker tries to do.

With an event village in the grounds of Traquair House, ample parking and camping areas surround the finish area, food and kit stalls and the trademark big marquee. The Deerstalker earns it's 'Mighty' status for more than just the tortuous running route complete with obstacles, but also for the party atmosphere that abounds through most of the day and night. Once the run is over the 'Mighty Beerstalker' party starts, complete with draught beer (if you are quick!) and bands.

Two years ago we did the High Peak Marathon, we were fit, and thought we were prepared, but got horribly lost on Bleaklow Moor (aka. 'Bog Hell') in the dark, got rather cold, and were very glad when the finish line came around. This year, bad memories (Bog Hell) forgotten, we were back for a second attempt.

O5 LogoSunday the 1st March 2009 saw the fourth Open 5 in the series at Malham. We drove down on Saturday arriving at the campsite in the dark, with the weather looking settled if cloudy, and positively warm compared to the previous event.

The next morning we realised not only what a beautiful place Malham is, but also how popular it is with the public. Through out the race we thought Dave had done a fantastic job planning the course so that as well as taking in the main tourist attractions, we didn’t spend all day having to avoid the numerous day trippers (all slightly confused as to why all these people were running past in different directions with maps).
