Jon on abseil

I teamed up with Rosemary Byde for this years Open5+ that was held near Holyhead on Anglesey.  Somewhat oddly this was going to be my first Open5+.  The Open5+ is a similar format to the standard Open5 races with addition of some of James "Trouser Filler" special activities.  As normal the website was a bit sparse on exactly what the special activities were, just that we need a climbing harness and had to carry some spare clothes.  The details were also suggesting that the biking was mainly on the road and suggested road tyres, so like quite a few other teams and after a bit of a discussion we took a gamble and went for road bikes hoping that the extra speed would pay off.

Open5 logoI was the only Top Banana to make the trip down to Grizedale for the last race in the 2010/11 Open5 series, others were busy making wedding invitations, working or doing "Admin".  After a slightly broken sleep in a nearby hostel thanks to some other slightly exuberant guests singing what seemed like campfire songs Sunday dawned with some surprisingly nice weather.

Open 5 LogoSunday 5th April brought to an end the 2008/2009 Mountain Hardware Open 5 Series, the final event being staged in the High Peak area around Hope; the name itself forming the basis of many a pun, all of which are probably too predictable to appear here. Probably. For Top Bananas, it was a low turnout - distance from Edinburgh, a Stag weekend and revision all being cited as reasons not to make the journey. It could also be due to a return to the High Peak area, recently visited by the team on the High Peak Marathon.

With rain and drizzle on the journey South on Saturday, the blue skies and sunshine were a welcome surprise on Sunday morning - James and Ian (the race planner) must have some good contacts high up.

O5 LogoSunday the 1st March 2009 saw the fourth Open 5 in the series at Malham. We drove down on Saturday arriving at the campsite in the dark, with the weather looking settled if cloudy, and positively warm compared to the previous event.

The next morning we realised not only what a beautiful place Malham is, but also how popular it is with the public. Through out the race we thought Dave had done a fantastic job planning the course so that as well as taking in the main tourist attractions, we didn’t spend all day having to avoid the numerous day trippers (all slightly confused as to why all these people were running past in different directions with maps).

2009 Open 5 #3, Stokesley PDF Print

Open 5 logoFebruary 1st saw the 3rd round of the 2008/2009 Open 5 series, with the event starting just outside of the North York's village of Stokesley. Even though the BBC had been forecasting snow down the East coast for Sunday, the turn out was still pretty impressive, although the cold wasn't conducive for hanging around for a chat!

On the drive in from Newcastle that morning, I did start to wonder if this was going to be a 'flat' Open 5 - nothing really stood out in the way of hills... Until we left Stokesley and headed North. Ahh... those hills. Not particularly high, but what they lost in altitude they made up for in gradient.
